What Kids Really Remember (It’s Not What You Think)

Updated: Mar 31

Most people think kids remember toys; they don’t. They remember moments.

The feeling of sitting next to someone who is reading to them, the sound of a familiar voice before bedtime, and the small laugh that comes from a story they didn’t expect.

Over the years, I’ve seen this again and again.

During my time working on cruise ships, I watched families travel together from all over the world. Different cultures, different languages, different lifestyles…

But one thing was always the same, kids didn’t remember the biggest attractions, they remembered how they felt, the connection, the attention, and the time spent together.

When I started creating DogToon Books, this idea stayed with me. I didn’t want to create just another children’s book. I wanted to create something simple. Something that helps kids feel seen. Because every child is different, just like every dog.

Some are curious. Some are shy. Some are bold. Some just want to stay close.

And none of those are things to fix. They are things to understand.

That’s really what DogToon is about. Not just stories. But small moments between a parent and a child. A moment where a child says, “That one is me.”

If a book can do that, then it’s done its job.

If you haven’t met the DogToons yet, you can explore them here. And maybe, you’ll find one that feels a little familiar.
